Lake Elmer Thomas Recreation Area (LETRA)

Lake Elmer Thomas Recreation Area (LETRA) is Fort Sill’s premier recreation destination meeting your recreation and lodging needs with close proximity to the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, Medicine Park, and Fort Sill. LETRA is located at the base of Mt. Scott on a 360 acre, no wake lake with year round camping availability and summer season recreation activities.

Getting There
Located 12 miles NW of the main post, LETRA can be reached by registered vehicles using Apache Gate on Hwy 49 and all other by Sheridan Road Gate.
From I-44, take the Hwy. 62/Rogers Lane exit and head West.  Exit to the right on Sheridan Road, Northbound.  Enter Fort Sill and turn left at Mow-Way Road (1st light). Turn right on Tower Two Road (be cautious of the water crossing). Go approximately 4 miles and turn left on North Boundary Road. Go approximately 4 miles and LETRA will be on the right!

Activities

Camping: LETRA is available for camping year round with several different options to include RV sites, tent camping, primitive camping and our modern cabins. For more information, please review the rental agreements.

Cabins: LETRA’s modern cabins are NOW OPEN and available for rental. They come in three sizes to meet your needs: small sleeps 4 persons, medium sleeps 6 and large sleeps 7. Linens are provided at the beginning of your stay and the kitchen includes a fridge, microwave, coffee pot and 2-burner stove along with the needed utensils and cookware to prepare hot, steaming “camp” food! Come stay with us and you can watch the sunset over Lake Elmer Thomas and Mount Scott from your front porch rocker!

Recreation: LETRA is a great destination for both summer and year round recreation activities for all to include:

Summer Season: Lifeguarded beach swimming area, double flume waterslide, and paddle boat, kayak, and canoe rentals.
All Seasons: Fishing, fishing boat rentals, biking, and hiking. *Note to hikers/bikers: Check in with Sportsman Services for personal safety located in bldg 1458, PunchBowl Rd., Fort Silll, OK before hiking/biking. Call 580-442-3453/3553 for more information.

Facilities Country Store: The Country Store offers many camping and recreational items for your stay at LETRA. The store is stocked with a variety of items to include drinks, snacks, fishing tackles, fishing licenses, hats, apparel, and often forgotten personal items. Check in and out for camping and rentals are also in the store.

Archery range: The archery range features an elevated 2-tier shooting platform. “It is another way families can enjoy the outdoors and exercise together,” said Sheikh. “It will also be useful for local schools teaching shooting sports and clubs who want to try archery. Patrons will need to bring their own bow to use the archery range.”

Group Use Areas: LETRA has several group use areas that are available for rental throughout the year that are ideal for parties, unit and organization functions, reunions, etc. Sizes and prices vary on location.

The Lodge: The Lodge is available to rent for parties, unit and organization functions, reunions, etc. The Lodge Snack Bar is open during the summer season.

Playgrounds: There are several playground structures located throughout the park with a variety of sizes and age recommendations.

Fishing Tournaments: Everyone is invited to come out and test their fishing skills or just have some fun at Lake Elmer Thomas Recreation Area’s Fishing Tournaments. Participants will fish for a different species each month and  the top three places will receive payouts. You can weigh up to five fish. A valid Oklahoma State Fishing license is required and can be purchased at the LETRA Country Store.  There is a $10 entry fee per tournament.

Bicycle rentals: LETRA now offers bicycles and helmets in all sizes so the whole family can go bike riding together. “Dr. Ben Cooper, the administrative physician at
Comanche County Memorial Hospital and one of the founders of the FitKids
coalition, presented me with a $2,000 check to tie in fitness opportunities like the fitness trails we are working on and the ones leading from Cache and the Wildlife Refuge, which are under construction,” said Brenda Spencer-Ragland, director of Family and MWR. “There are 19 new bikes available to rent for family fun and fitness.”

“When LETRA opens up, there won’t just be all the new additions – playgrounds, archery range, beach front improvement, bicycles, the cabins and improvements to the miniature golf and the water slide. So if you want to get in the great outdoors this is a great place to go.”

Watercraft rentals: The price for watercraft rental ranges from $5 to $13 an hour and for miniature golf the cost is $3 per day per person. To rent these items, stop in at the Country Store. The waterslide, beach with lifeguards, watercraft rentals and mini-golf, are open Wednesday and Thursday from noon to 6 p.m. and Friday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Bathhouses: LETRA has 3 bathhouses for use throughout the park. The RV Park bathhouse has both bathrooms and a showering facility open all year. The Beach House is a bathroom and showering facility only open while the beach area is open during the summer season. The westside of the park by the playgrounds has a bathroom facility.

Laundry: There is a 24-hr, coin operated laundry facility located in the RV Park bathhouse.

Park Rules

  • Pets are allowed in the park; however, they must always remain on a leash and should not be left unattended or chained outside the cabins or RVs.
  • Ground fires are NOT allowed. Fires contained in an off ground pit or fires associated with grills are allowed unless a fire ban has been issued for the area.
  • Park quiet hours are from 2200-0700.
  • Any consumption of alcohol is to be in accordance with the state laws. Consumers must be 21 years of age and unit sponsored functions must get approval by the garrison commander.
  • Smoking is allowed in areas at least 50 ft from any building entrance . All cigarette buds should be completely distinguished and disposed of in a trash receptacle.
  • Music is permitted in the park; however, visitors are asked to be respectful of other visitors and keep it at a volume that does not invade other visitor’s environment.
  • Swimming is only allowed at the beach area when a LETRA lifeguard is on duty.
